Ladies Leading the Way
Woman in Agriculture Month
March Moments – across the globe woman farmers are being recognized for their contributions to feed the world. On the local level, we are giving our input too. Check out my chat with the staff. Give it up for the Walkingbird Female Farmer Spotlight!
Empowering Young Woman in Agriculture
Jen – Farm Owner/Operator.
Mentoring beginner farmers is key to our farms’ success and long-term viability. I make a pledge to my employees to teach them about crop planning, operating equipment and driving tractors, financial planning, building community and everything else that goes into running and maintaining our farm. If someone is willing to learn, I will support that journey.
Megan – Farm Manager.
Meg’s experience includes community gardening, nonprofit work and CSA farming. She’s worked in horticultural therapy, job skills training and integrating people with disabilities and addiction into living with the community. Meg has found a lot of comfort and support working with other women. “It’s hard to talk about our accomplishments without feeling like we are showing off. If we are celebrating women in farming, we should be talking about our accomplishments for the future generations of women who want to farm”. Working with other women is grounding and powerful. “Being here, I feel joy, respected, valued, encouraged to grow.” What would you like to say to our customers? “If your goal is to support a local farm and your community that grows produce with love and intention, this is the place to be.”
Lillianna – Farm Apprentice.
On the farm, Lilli is gaining confidence working alongside other female farmers. She enjoys hard work and doing things that benefit the planet. “Feeding people healthy things has made me feel so good about what I do.” What’s the future look like? “I want to remember how I feel working here, I’m not stressed or pressured, I feel motivated and I want to come to work.” Feeling supported and comfortable is essential. “Working with other women, I don’t feel like I am being looked down on. I am trying to prove it to myself. I am not trying to prove it to other people. Men will ask if I need help, the expectation is, I can’t do it.”What would you like to say to our customers? “You are getting good produce, and you are benefiting the environment – we don’t have a lot of waste, we are not spraying things that kill the ground, we work with the planet. You can feel good about yourself when you buy our food.”
